What to do with thick yarn?

Hello, fellow crafters! I still have quite a bit of thick yarn on my shelf—40 meters per 50 grams—in blue and purple. I’m looking for patterns for a jacket, a soul warmer, or a sweater.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Christina, one idea would be to knit a thick, cozy blanket out of it. Or a rug.

Hi Christina,
Since I knit a lot with felting yarn (which is 50 m per 50 g), I know just how thick your yarn is. Personally, I imagine a sweater or jacket made from it would be quite bulky. I’m not sure if that would look good or if you’d want to wear something like that, given its appearance and weight.

I’d actually be more in favor of a nice, big, rustic-style knitted blanket. You can just pull it over your legs whenever you want and feel warm underneath it. Nice, thick fringes along the edges would look good, too.

Or you could knit pillowcases out of it, if they match your decor in terms of color and style.

Is the yarn solid-colored or variegated? Maybe the yarns would go well together, and then you could create designs with patterns and color blocks.

Best regards, Ina

I like to knit or crochet decorative items with such thick yarn.

I’ve crocheted large pumpkins for fall decorations.
A large gnome—a round ball for a big belly and a hat pulled low over its (nonexistent) eyes.

Last winter, I also knitted really thick snoods from yarn I’d had in my stash for a long time. I love it.
Yarn: 150 grams / 75 meters—it was just enough for the snood.

How long do you have to let yarn rest? ;-)

Thick yarn is also great for stuffing things like dolls and amigurumi.

Josefa, well-aged yarn—if it’s been sitting in my closet for 5 or 6 years, I think it’s well-aged. I definitely have too much yarn in my stash; otherwise, this wouldn’t happen.

Oh, so that’s how it is :-)

@Wollwunderpetra
Would you happen to have a photo of your gnome made from the thick yarn? How big is he, and how did you manage to stuff the big round belly so it’s really nice and round? Just a lot of stuffing? And does the hat stand up on its own, or how did you do that? I like the idea, and a gnome like that would feel right at home on my stairs too :-)

Best, Ina

Ina, I haven’t crocheted a big gnome like that yet. It’s on my list of ideas. But I can really imagine (judging by my pumpkins) that it would work. As for the hat, I think it would stand on its own, or you could use stuffing to push and shape it. I’m picturing really thick yarn for this, though, and a size 12 hook, just like I used for my pumpkin.
