Crocheting cable patterns

Dear users, dear authors,
How do you crochet cable patterns? Is it harder than knitted cable patterns? 

I actually find knitted cable patterns harder, because I need a cable needle for those. 

 

How do you do it when crocheting?

In crochet, the cables are created by crocheting in a crisscross pattern using post double crochets. That’s how I know it.

  In the first row, you only crochet double crochets. In the next row, the cables are created using post double crochets. You skip one double crochet, then make a post double crochet, and then make the next post double crochet not into the next double crochet but into the one you skipped.

  You really have to pay attention to make sure you’re always crocheting around the right double crochets. I crocheted this little jacket with a cable pattern years ago.

But the crochet pros can surely explain it better than I can 😊

Wollwunder Petra has already described it quite well. I’ve crocheted cables quite a few times now, and they’re made using post double crochets or post treble crochets, depending on how wide the cable is. On my latest shawl, the cable spans 6 stitches. The trickiest part is securing the crossed stitches on the wrong side in the correct rows with post double crochets. That’s what I call it.
I love cables, and once you get the hang of it, it’s actually not that hard.

I prefer knitting cables.
I don’t mind using a cable needle for that.
Small—that is, narrow—cables can also be knitted without a cable needle.
