Yarn is shedding/fuzzing/fraying

Hi everyone,
I’m practically at my wits’ end.
I have a problem that’s hard to explain, but I’ll give it a try.
So, I’m mostly crocheting amigurumi at the moment, and I only use Schachenmayr Catania yarn and 3.5 or 3 mm hooks. Now for my problem: I always see in the patterns that the crocheted piece is nice and smooth, without any little fuzzies sticking out. For me, however, it’s like this: for example, when I crochet single crochet stitches, the yarn sheds/fuzzes/frays as I go. In other words, the crocheted piece holds together, but there are always these little fuzzies hanging off the yarn. I don’t know if this is just a luxury problem, but it bothers me because everywhere else I see how smooth it looks. I’ll try to attach a picture.
Have you ever had a problem like this? Could it be the yarn, or maybe even the hook? Or is it completely normal and there’s nothing you can do about it? I always wash my hands beforehand because I thought that might be the cause, and it’s not dust either; the yarn is on a nearly dust-free surface, and otherwise it’s packed in dust-proof boxes.
Looking forward to your replies!
Best regards
Moe

P.S.: I think you can clearly see the layer of fuzz I mean in the pictures!

I just noticed the picture is right above the greeting—sorry about that, it’s my first post...

Hi crochet-me,
welcome to our forum.
I moved the picture down.

If the profile picture/avatar picture doesn’t belong to you, please remove it. It looks like it’s from a manga/anime?

Hi Moe,
That is strange, because Schachenmayr Catania is known for its high-quality mercerized cotton.
I usually crochet with Scheepjes, but I’ve never had this “fuzz problem” with it either.
Do all the colors get fuzzy for you?
Best regards, Birgit

No, I’ve never seen anything like that either—it almost looks like acrylic yarn. Very unusual for Catania. I’ve never had any problems with it before; it’s always been nice and smooth.

Is this reused wool? Have you crocheted with it before, then unraveled it, and then crocheted with it again?

@CadoohARTland
Yes, I think so too. I specifically chose Schachenmayr because people always say it’s one of the higher-quality ones.
Yes, I’d say all the colors shed lint; maybe there’s one where it doesn’t happen, but I can’t remember any. I also didn’t buy them all at once, so they come from different production periods.

No, the wool is straight from the skein, and it had just been unpacked.

Could you please answer my question about your profile picture?

It’s just a bit of a shame, because I’ve actually stocked up on pretty much all the Schachenmayr colors, but I only really noticed it recently when I saw it happening to others. And switching now is, of course, a bit more expensive.
But it seems I have no other choice right now, because with this problem, I can’t help but look critically at my crocheted items.
Could someone perhaps recommend a yarn brand with the same thickness, a nice color selection, and an acceptable price? Because right now, the only thing keeping me with Schachenmayr is that the yarn hardly splits at all.

I was referring to your avatar picture. The new avatar picture also looks like it’s from a manga or anime.
You can only upload pictures here—or use them as an avatar or profile picture—if you own the rights to them.

Hi Moe,
Could it be that you’re moving your supporting hand (probably your left?) too much? Or maybe you have rough fingertips? If so, you’d have the same problem with other brands too...
Best regards

The Camilla from buttinette is similar to the Catania, but you’re right—the problem could still occur, since the Catania is actually super smooth.

Okay, the rough fingertips could be a factor, of course... I play guitar, so the skin there is relatively rough... Is there any way to fix this, maybe with hand cream or something?
Thank you so much for all your kind messages...

Okay, thanks anyway for the recommendation—some colors are only available seasonally at Schachenmayr, so I was looking for an alternative anyway! Thanks a lot!

That really is a problem. Once you get your skin soft again, you’ll probably have trouble playing the guitar—it’s not that easy.
Here’s a picture of Catania showing what it normally looks like when crocheted:

Hi Moe,
I also think that only using hand cream will help.
It’s best to buy a cream with urea—that’s the fastest way to soften your hands.
I don’t think it’ll get in the way of playing guitar. I know several—even some who go overboard 😉—guitarists and cellists (where the problem is arguably even worse due to the thicker strings) who still have soft hands.

Let me know if applying cream—if you decide to try it—works for you.
Btw: Are you a sworn translator? If so, feel free to send me a PM 😊
Best regards, Nina

Hi Moe,

I just thought of those thin cotton gloves—
the kind used for a “hand treatment with lots of cream.”

Maybe they’ll help prevent the wool from getting rough.

Hi, thank you so much for all your kind help. I tried using hand cream, and it’s already better—not perfect yet, but I’m sure it’ll get there. I’m starting to think it might be indirectly related to the fact that my hands sweat a lot. It’s just a combination of factors.
I also wanted to give this forum a try to see how active everyone is here. Since I have another question right away, I’ll start a new thread—maybe you’ll have a few more tips there, too.
But thanks again—you’ve really helped me out.

There’s always something going on here in the forum, and you can get help if you have any problems, too.
