Dear users, dear authors,
what do you do with a sewing pattern as a projector file?
Found here in the text for this pattern:

Hi Josefa,

Sewing with a projector is a growing trend. Instead of taping the sewing pattern together and tracing it off, the sewing pattern is projected onto the fabric using a projector.

Projectors are now available for under 100€, and there are large groups on social media dedicated to sewing with projectors.

A projector file is a bonus included in an ebook. I’m also in the process of updating my old ebooks with projector files, as demand has increased significantly.

All of my new ebooks come with a projector file.

Best regards,
Sonja

Okay, so we’ll be seeing this more often.
Thanks for the info, Sonja.

I’m more of an *old-school* kind of person :-) and prefer paper patterns, because I can adjust them to my specific measurements as needed—that’s not really possible with a projector file, though that might just be a generational thing :-) You also need the space to set up a projector, and I don’t have that anyway.

Best regards, Inge

Yes, that’s true, Akela. I was skeptical for a long time, too, and I still don’t have a projector for sewing. But now I’m really considering getting one, partly to save on printing and paper.

Of course, the part about adjusting the pattern is true. I usually don’t have to make many adjustments myself, and neither do I for my kids’ projects or bags—so it’s really practical.

You just have to install it once, and then it’s great. Everyone I know who cuts out patterns this way says they’d never go back to the old way.

Best regards,
Sonja

I’ve already bought a few sewing tutorials here, and when selecting the file to print, I wondered what a “projector file” is. After purchasing a pattern, you’re provided with a download. Sometimes there were as many as 10 different files for the various sizes, and in some cases the filename said “A4” while in others it said “A0.” Since I’m familiar with the A4 format from regular paper, I knew that was the pattern I needed to print out.

The A0 files, therefore, are the ones for the projector. That’s pretty confusing for a beginner sewer.

Now, back to the projector. Yes, I know what a projector is… When the projector projects the pattern onto the fabric, is the projector mounted on the ceiling because the fabric is lying on the table below? And how do you know it’s at the right height? It has to be exactly right, otherwise the pattern will be too big or too small. So you probably need a sturdy cutting table with a projector mounted above it at the correct height. That’s only for professionals who have the space for it. Most hobby sewers cut their fabric at the kitchen table.

Young people today who want to keep up with the (digital) times will naturally also look into what new possibilities are out there. For sewing beginners like me, though, it’s more tangible (in the truest sense of the word) to have the pattern right in front of you—to be able to touch it, place it on the fabric, adjust it, make markings, write notes on it, and so on.

For me, a sewing project begins with the pattern. I want to savor that moment in peace, looking forward to the sewing process and the finished piece. In my case, there’s no need to rush through it or transfer the pattern efficiently. Yes, it costs a bit in paper and printer ink, but after that, I save the pattern for future use. I love my collection of patterns. It’s like a little library where I pull one out every now and then. I can’t touch an electronic file—I’m more of a tactile person.

I wish all readers a wonderful afternoon.
Warm regards, Ina

Hi Ina,

Yes, you have to align and install the projector in a fixed position.
But there are now also mini projectors that are fairly easy to set up. You can use the scaling square to align the sewing pattern well.

More and more people are actually setting things up this way. I didn’t believe it myself at first, but relevant groups on social media have tens of thousands of members!

By the way, the A0 sheets in my e-books are for plotting. You can also have the sewing pattern printed on A0 at a copy shop.

The projector file is usually called exactly that. The great thing about it is that you can display only the size you want.

But of course, everyone has to see for themselves what works best.

I hesitated for a long time, too. The trend has been around for 2 or 3 years now.

Best regards, Sonja

Thank you, dear Sonja, for your explanation. It’s likely that things will always continue to evolve in every field. And of course, young people today are much more digitally oriented and want to change things in their own way. As a hobby seamstress, I don’t have to follow the trend, but you’re more of an expert and still young enough. Modern knowledge never hurts.

Best regards, Ina

Hello everyone,
as Sonja so nicely pointed out, you can order A0 files for large-format printing at a copy shop or through an online service provider at a reasonable price—that saves you the trouble of taping the pieces together.
Projector files also have a grid overlay, just like graph paper, so that the pattern lines up correctly when transferred to the fabric.
Personally, I don’t use or create projector files, since a perfect fit is very important to me and I adjust almost all patterns accordingly.
Best regards, Marion

It was really interesting for me to read this.

I learned something new again. I’ve always worked with paper patterns up until now and didn’t know anything about using a projector.

We’ve had a projector for 18 years, but we only use it to watch movies on the big screen, and—just like Ina—I wondered how the projector gets mounted on the ceiling, since my fabric is lying on the table.
