I’ve already bought a few sewing tutorials here, and when selecting the file to print, I wondered what a “projector file” is. After purchasing a pattern, you’re provided with a download. Sometimes there were as many as 10 different files for the various sizes, and in some cases the filename said “A4” while in others it said “A0.” Since I’m familiar with the A4 format from regular paper, I knew that was the pattern I needed to print out.
The A0 files, therefore, are the ones for the projector. That’s pretty confusing for a beginner sewer.
Now, back to the projector. Yes, I know what a projector is… When the projector projects the pattern onto the fabric, is the projector mounted on the ceiling because the fabric is lying on the table below? And how do you know it’s at the right height? It has to be exactly right, otherwise the pattern will be too big or too small. So you probably need a sturdy cutting table with a projector mounted above it at the correct height. That’s only for professionals who have the space for it. Most hobby sewers cut their fabric at the kitchen table.
Young people today who want to keep up with the (digital) times will naturally also look into what new possibilities are out there. For sewing beginners like me, though, it’s more tangible (in the truest sense of the word) to have the pattern right in front of you—to be able to touch it, place it on the fabric, adjust it, make markings, write notes on it, and so on.
For me, a sewing project begins with the pattern. I want to savor that moment in peace, looking forward to the sewing process and the finished piece. In my case, there’s no need to rush through it or transfer the pattern efficiently. Yes, it costs a bit in paper and printer ink, but after that, I save the pattern for future use. I love my collection of patterns. It’s like a little library where I pull one out every now and then. I can’t touch an electronic file—I’m more of a tactile person.
I wish all readers a wonderful afternoon.
Warm regards, Ina
