I’d also like to show you Set 2. I like this one almost even better because it has brighter colors. The fleece is a lovely light blue. But my grandson will probably be more interested in the outside.

Best regards, Ina

This set looks great too, Ina. What a great idea—a double-layer sewn beanie with fleece.

Yeah, I agree. If you only have one layer of fabric, you always end up with seams on the inside, and it doesn’t keep you as warm either. Here, the patterned fabric is just jersey—on its own, it would be way too thin.

Ooh, Leo can’t see this—otherwise he’ll want one too. He’s (like all kids his age 😅) the biggest Paw Patrol fan.

Really well sewn!

Wow, Ina,
your sewing projects really look great. Not only will your grandson be happy, but his parents must be thrilled too.

Oh, Ina, how cute....
Is “something like this” hard to sew? Maybe by hand? I can’t sew with a machine—only with one of those really old treadle ones. I should have bought that one at the last flea market... An old Singer with accessories—in need of some TLC but still in working order. That’s the one I used to sew my very first stitches.

Dear Steffi and Petra, I’m glad you like my creations, too.

I didn’t find it difficult to sew. Neither pattern is complicated, after all. And the size is manageable, too. So, I think I could even sew it by hand. But it’s definitely more fun with a sewing machine. Dear Steffi, the next time you see a working sewing machine, you should snap it up. You can make so many beautiful things with it. I haven’t been sewing for very long either, and I’m still really excited about it. Yes, I can knit and crochet too, but sewing is even better because you can work with so many beautiful fabrics and patterns.

Best regards, Ina

Ina, I have another question about the fabric:
How thick does it need to be for a beanie? And what type of fabric is it? Cotton, right?
And how big were the pieces you used for it?

Dear Monika,

the hat doesn’t “have to” be any particular thickness. Since hats are only worn in fall or spring, or in winter, I divide them into 2 thicknesses. The hats for fall or spring are thinner than the winter hats and, in my case, made of cotton jersey. It feels very pleasant on the skin (because it’s cotton) and it stretches in both directions, so it’s elastic.

For a winter hat, the outer fabric can also be a little thicker. In that case I would use summer sweat fabric. I’m sure you know it from sweatshirts.

For my two sets, I used exactly these fabric qualities. I made each of the insides with cotton fleece fabric. The two “inner hats made of fleece” are sewn exactly the same way as the ones made from the colorful fabric. Then both are placed inside one another and sewn together inside out.

With fleece, there are also thicker and thinner qualities. You can tell by the weight per square meter. The thinner fleece is for the fall and spring hats, the thicker one for winter.

For my Paw Patrol hat, I used thin cotton fleece with a weight of 220 g/square meter. The other one comes from a remnants bundle and is a bit thicker (= for the winter hat with the rockets).

The sewing-savvy ladies here on CP also advised me to use flannel for the lining. But I couldn’t find anything in the right solid colors, only checked fabrics. Maybe you have something in your wardrobe that you can use for it.

About the measurements:

For the reversible beanie with turn-up brim you need 2 pieces of fabric for the outside of the hat, each 27 x 27 cm, and 2 pieces of fabric in the same size for the soft inside.

For the reversible loop scarf with turn-up edge you need 2 pieces of fabric measuring 30 x 26 cm for the outside and the same for the fluffy inside. I have already included the seam allowances for sewing.

Best regards, Ina

PS. To the experts: If I have written something wrong, you are welcome to correct it or add to it. Thank you.

Oh wow, thank you, dear Ina, for these detailed details. That’s actually quite a small amount of fabric needed. Cotton fleece—I’ll have to see where I can find some.

I could actually see myself making a hat like this for myself, for the in-between seasons.

Since the hat doesn’t have a cuff, it has to be sewn to fit the head circumference quite precisely. You’ve definitely inspired me (as you have so many times before) to take a closer look at this.

Thanks and best wishes from Monika

I just wanted to let you know that my grandson and his parents really liked the items I sewed. In the picture, you can also see a sweater made from the “rocket fabric”—I’d sewn that just a little while before. He wanted to wear this colorful mix just like that.

Best regards, Ina
