Fleece

Hello everyone,

I need your help again. My daughter-in-law asked for reversible beanies and loops for my little grandson for fall/winter.

Yesterday I asked Oskar which motifs are popular with him right now: Paw Patrol, Pokémon, rockets, and outer space. Okay, that much is clear. I already have some cotton jersey “rocket fabric.” Now what’s missing is the inside of the hat and the loop, namely the fleece.

The sewing pattern I bought here on CP doesn’t go into any more detail about it.

So the hat and the loop are supposed to be double-sided or reversible. The outside should be made of cotton jersey fabric with a motif, and the inside from a nice, soft fleece material that feels pleasant on the skin. While researching online, I found that there are soooo many types of fleece. But which one is the right one for the lining of my hat / loop?

If I had a fabric store nearby, I would go there directly and get advice, and I could feel the fabrics. But unfortunately there isn’t one. I have to buy the fabric online.

Could you please advise me which fleece is the right one, how thick it needs to be, and what I should pay attention to? Do you have a few tips for me? Is fleece stretchy too? Because the other side of the hat, the cotton jersey, is stretchy as well. Does the fleece then automatically stretch along with it, or is there something I need to keep in mind?

So many questions... I know, but I’m sure you can help me.

Thank you very much and best wishes from Ina

I’d also like to expand my question from “fleece” to include “plush.” Some models you see have an inner lining made of short-pile plush. That might work, too. But here, too, I’m not really sure if that’s the right fabric for the lining.

Best regards, Ina

I was thinking of using stretchy flannel or sweatshirt fabric for the lining, but I’d go with the thinner summer sweatshirt fabric—it keeps you warm and is easy to wash.

Thanks, Inge. “Stretchy flannel” or “summer sweat fabric” for the lining—I’ll see what I can find.

I’ve also used velour or stretch velvet for the lining before, or the wrong side of thin but brushed, stretchy sweatshirt fabric.

For the linings of neck warmers and hats, I really like using the solid-colored fleece from Buttinette.
It’s very cozy and quite affordable. I’ve always been satisfied with the quality.
Plus, it comes in a wide variety of colors.
I also like using it for the linings of jackets/vests or simple fleece vests for fall

Thank you too, dear Notnadel and B_Engal—those are very helpful tips for me.
I’ll post here in the forum and show you what I ended up using once the set is finished.

Best regards, Ina
