Dear users, dear authors,
how do you sew a flange, and what are the benefits?
How do you do a concealed zipper?
I found a corresponding pattern in the shop again, and of course I had to ask. :-) Thanks for the info.

A flanged edge is sewn as follows: first, place the fabric pieces right sides together and sew them together as usual; then turn the whole thing right side out, measure the edge that is to stand out, and topstitch it from the edge on the right side of the fabric—that’s the whole trick to sewing a flanged edge.
Sewing a concealed zipper isn’t rocket science either. You measure how wide the zipper teeth/coil are, and that width plus the seam allowance gives you the *coverage* for the zipper. That means if the zipper teeth/coil are about 5 mm wide, I need those 5 mm to the right and left of the zipper; they will cover the zipper exactly. I also have to factor in the millimeters I need to sew the zipper onto the fabric, which for me is usually just the width of the presser foot, and often less. Ironing beforehand makes this kind of work a lot easier—as my teacher always said, “Well ironed is half sewn.”
For pants, a concealed zipper is a different story; have a look here:

What’s the difference between this and a hotel closure? So, what is a hotel closure?

A hotel closure is a pillow closure without buttons or a zipper; the layers at the back of the pillow are sewn on top of each other so that the pillowcase extends from the back all the way to the bottom of the pillow on one side and halfway up from the bottom to the center on the other. This prevents the pillow from slipping out, keeps it in place, and ensures that neither buttons nor a zipper dig into you when you lie on it. A simple and effective pillowcase

Best regards, Inge
