Crocheted doilies on furniture and side tables—do people even do that anymore?

There’s this common stereotype that older women, in particular, place crocheted doilies or lace doilies on the armrests and headrests of armchairs and sofas, or on side tables and under the matching lamps.
Is that still a thing? Does anyone still do that?
If so, are there ways to make it look a little more “stylish”?

I could imagine that you could achieve some nice effects by draping a stylish throw over an armchair with a few cute granny squares, and that the doilies don’t necessarily have to be white or made of crocheted lace.

Haha. Yeah. People still do that. In fact, I just took on a commission—3 crocheted doilies in blue :)

Crocheted items, yes, but doilies are probably pretty rare :-)

The trend has been back for a while now, for example: pillows, small baskets and larger baskets, blankets, vase covers, small rugs

Yes, of course—I have a few lying around, also to protect the furniture. Our living room cabinet, for example—the wood is soft and gets nicks easily, so with a doily underneath, nothing can happen. The same goes for the little table with the marble top: a doily under the vase or the glass lantern, and it makes less noise.

Best regards, Hilde
