Steek knitting

Dear users, dear authors,
You know how it goes. Every now and then, I search the internet for new topics, conversation starters, etc.
Yesterday, I came across the term “steek knitting.” If I understand correctly, this is used when knitting in the round. Where the opening—for example, on a jacket—is supposed to be later, you secure the knitted fabric with a few extra stitches so you can make the vertical cut for the jacket opening? Is that roughly how it works?

Hi Josefa,

I’ve never done this myself, but I’ve read about it quite often from other knitters and heard about it in videos. It’s done so that you can knit in the round. With multicolored knitting, it’s easier
to knit in the round because you only work knit stitches, and the color changes are easier to manage.

The term is “steek” and the verb is “to steek.” Maybe you can edit your post so
someone can answer your question.
