Changing the thread on a sewing machine

Dear users and authors,
how do you change the thread on a sewing machine?

Changing the thread on a standard sewing machine is actually quite simple. However, the thread should always be suited to the fabric you’re sewing, and the correct needle should be inserted into the needle bar—then nothing stands in the way of your sewing enjoyment. :-)
Most sewing machines have arrows showing how the thread is threaded, and often there is also a needle threader at the bottom near the needle bar, which makes threading much easier.
It’s a different story with an overlock/coverlock machine, where you may need to thread anywhere from 3 to 5 threads at once. It’s helpful to have a pair of tweezers with a curved tip on hand, as they make threading much easier. On these machines, too, the path of the individual threads is marked in different colors inside the flap, and with a little practice you’ll quickly get the hang of it.
FOR ALL MACHINES, MAKE SURE THE TENSION DISC HAS ALWAYS TAKEN UP THE THREAD PROPERLY AND THAT THE THREAD TENSION IS CORRECT; OTHERWISE, THE THREAD WILL RUN THROUGH THE MACHINE IN A TANGLED MESS AND FRUSTRATION IS GUARANTEED.

Every sewing machine is a little different. Especially if you’re a beginner or have a new machine, I recommend taking a look at the machine’s instruction manual.

For used machines, you can often still find the instruction manuals online as PDFs.

Otherwise, as Akela already mentioned, you can easily follow the arrows for threading.

Threading an overlock or coverlock machine is, of course, more complex. But manufacturers often provide videos on how to do this as well!
