Is the pattern important for dishcloths / washcloths?

is the pattern important for knitted / crocheted dishcloths or for knitted / crocheted washcloths? Are there any differences in durability?

The pattern is important in that the texture of the cloth makes a difference. A bit of texture is pleasant in washcloths and functional in dishcloths.
Lace patterns in dishcloths tend to be impractical, as tiny residues can get caught in them, so hygiene is not ideal when drying.

Knitted dishcloths should also be worked very tightly, not too loosely.

Nope, for me it doesn’t matter whether a dishcloth has a pattern. I knit in garter stitch, use cotton yarn in various thicknesses, and often knit diagonally or with two different colors

When using them in the kitchen, I don’t care about the pattern or color. But since I make them myself, I do enjoy being able to crochet or knit different patterns. It makes things more interesting.

I’ve also noticed that I have to use smaller needles—that makes them sturdier, which I (like Monika) prefer.
