Dear users, dear authors,
Fashion magazines say that denim Bermuda shorts and wide-leg jeans are (back) in style. The latter look like what used to be known as a culotte, but this season they end just above the ankle. Do you like this style of pants?

Does anyone else have anything to say about this?

I’m currently taking some of these pieces apart for other projects, Josefa, :-) I used to have these culottes from knee-length to ankle-length and even longer, really long, basically like a floor mop ;-) :-)
I had these culottes in denim and lightweight summer fabrics, but I really can’t stand the sight of them anymore. Since I’m on the chubby side, I can’t wear normal skirts because otherwise I chafe myself raw, so I switched to these culottes. I had some with wide, straight legs and some where you really couldn’t tell they were culottes, the legs were cut that wide.

Best, Inge

I never really understood the point of culottes like that, because I always thought you either wear pants or a skirt. But the way you explain it, it makes sense.
Could it be that these culottes might have evolved from the old riding outfits women used to wear ages ago? Or am I completely off track?

Well, Josefa, you’re absolutely right—because much of what’s celebrated today as a new invention in the fashion industry actually has its roots in the fashion of past centuries; after all, the wheel had already been invented here, too ;-) :-) Okay, women today truly no longer need hoop skirts or crinolines, and thankfully the whalebone corset is a thing of the past, but many elements have nevertheless survived. The popular lacing on many summer dresses, for example, has its origins in medieval fashion, since back then people didn’t yet know zippers, and buttons as we know them today didn’t exist yet either. Only the nobility could afford buttons, as they were made of horn or whalebone and were extremely valuable and expensive. Mother-of-pearl was also available, but it had to be imported at great expense and was therefore accessible only to the high nobility.

Best regards, Inge

You know how it goes.
Nothing stays out of style forever.
Maybe hoop skirts and crinolines will make a comeback after all. :-)
