Dear users, dear authors,
how can you shorten a continuous zipper and attach the slider?

A continuous zipper can be shortened by simply using scissors to cut it to the length you need, but you should also secure the ends properly.
Threading on a slider takes a bit of dexterity to get it onto both zipper chains. You have to pull the continuous zipper apart slightly and then thread the slider onto it carefully, making sure that both chains go into the slider at the same time if possible. With a little practice, you’ll get the hang of it quite quickly.

Shortening a zipper
If the zipper is too long, you don’t necessarily have to buy a new one; you
can shorten it. To do this, you’ll need a pair of pliers and a bit of dexterity
, then first remove the stopper / metal tab at the front, then use pliers to remove the “teeth”
and secure it again with the metal tab

Best regards, Inge

It’s very easy to thread the slider onto a continuous zipper if you cut off a few zipper teeth on one side.

And how do you keep it from slipping off again?

You can prevent that with a few stitches on the zipper, basically sewing a “stop” by hand.

And how do you sew the zipper in?

Hi Josefa,

sewing in zippers can be difficult or easy. It always depends a bit on the sewing project.

I always recommend that beginners start with a very simple project, such as a pillowcase or a small, straight-cut pouch.

Most e-books explain how to sew zippers into clothing quite well.

However, replacing a zipper—for example, on a pair of jeans or a jacket you already own—can be quite difficult without prior knowledge and practice. With existing garments, you also don’t have as much leeway as when you’re sewing something completely new. Patience is key here, and it’s best to do it by hand.

Best regards,
Sonja

That’s right, Sonja—with some pants, you almost have to unpick half the garment to replace a zipper. I don’t do that myself anymore; I have it done at a tailor’s shop.
