Dear users, dear authors,
Which fabrics are generally easy to sew, and where might there be difficulties or challenges?

Smooth cotton fabrics are the easiest to sew; linen is also manageable, but you should make sure it isn’t woven too loosely. Even stretch fabrics are relatively easy to sew, especially if you have machines like an overlock or coverlock, but they’re easy to work with even on a regular sewing machine. It gets trickier with silk, chiffon, and voile—these are very thin fabrics that tend to slip under the presser foot if you’re not careful. With pile fabrics like terry cloth, plush, or wool, it becomes problematic if you ever need to rip a seam out, because the pile makes it hard to see where the stitches are, and you have to be extremely careful or you’ll end up with holes—but this is also the case with jersey. With a little practice, though, you should be able to handle any fabric, because when you’re sewing something for yourself, there’s no need to rush through it. It’s better to take your time at the sewing machine rather than rush through it—that way, you’ll end up with a result you’re happy with and that looks good. TfT projects are bound to happen either way; that’s just the nature of things, and I manage to make them quite well myself sometimes :-) TfT = something for the bin

Best regards, Inge

@Inge, the worst thing about pile fabrics is all the lint that ends up flying everywhere 😂

I’d say medium-weight fabrics are the easiest to sew, e.g., poplin, cretonne, twill, denim, cotton jersey, Romanit jersey, etc.

Thin, slippery fabrics, very stretchy fabrics, and thick fabrics can be a real challenge, depending on the sewing project.
For thin, slippery fabrics, you can, for example, sew pattern paper along with the fabric for extra stability and remove it afterward.
For very stretchy fabrics, adjusting the presser foot pressure and thread tension can help.
For very thick fabrics, it can help to use a height compensation tool, increase the presser foot pressure, and gently flatten areas where seams are supposed to cross with a rubber mallet beforehand.
