Reel: What is a reel, and what do you use it for?

Dear users, dear authors,
what do you use a reel for?

This is what an umbrella swift looks like: basically a wooden frame that you open up together with the yarn you want to wind. There are certainly other swifts too; maybe someone else can say something about those.
