Dear users, dear authors,
There’s plenty of room here for everyone who loves cable patterns, whether knitted or crocheted. Have fun!

Oh, how wonderful!
I’m totally obsessed with cable patterns right now.
I used to think they were super difficult, but they’re not at all. And they’re a ton of fun.
Here are a few of my “creations”:

This was an attempt that unfortunately failed because the center “collapsed”… but the cable was beautiful *laughs*

I’ve finally managed to make a poncho for my youngest.
I still need to rethink a few things, but then it should turn out “perfect” 😊
In any case, I really like this “attempt” so far.

I like cables, too.

I knitted this jacket following a pattern. I was fascinated by how I started at the top, and how the cables fit together so beautifully all over.

A little cable pattern

This turned into a little shawl for me. I love it when I get to knit many rows before the next cable pattern

Marion, your wrist warmers are great. The cable pattern ends at the cuff. I really like that.

That reminds me—I knitted something like this once for my neighbor, too

Petra... your wrist warmers are also very pretty; I really like the pots and the color.😊

I’m knitting a cardigan with a cable pattern
Now I’m not sure how I should do it.
I’m working the raglan with a cable pattern (I’m knitting the cardigan from the top down).
Should I also make a cable pattern on the sleeve, or would it be better on the front, or even in the center of the back? I’m thinking of a Celtic cable pattern over 24 stitches.
I have a photo of my work in progress; maybe you can spot something.
Many thanks for your answers.

I think I’d do cables on the sleeves and add a Celtic cable on the back as well.

Thank you so much 😊

I’d almost made up my mind 😜 but was still undecided—now it’s set: sleeves with a 3-strand cable, back with a Celtic cable 😊

What’s been posted so far looks great. I’m curious to see how the rest turns out. I have absolutely no idea what the Celtic cable pattern will look like.

Is the jacket for you? The color is beautiful.

Yes, it’s a jacket for me.
Thanks for liking the color—I do too 😊

Last night, I was in high spirits as I knitted the different cable patterns… and now I have to unravel what I knitted yesterday (about 10 cm) 😢 (the sleeves didn’t look the same)—one cable pattern came out wrong 😢😢. That’s what happens when you knit without studying the pattern closely—or when you study it differently 😋
—so back to square one......

Yes, the joy of unraveling 😉
Do you weave in a safety thread in those spots so you don’t have to unravel the whole thing?

I (only have to) frog back to where I was yesterday morning..... so at the start of the new cable pattern....

Lifeline? I’ve never heard of that, but it sounds great.... I googled what a lifeline is, and now I’m putting one in.... I’ll try it out.
Thanks for the tip 😊

Unfortunately, my hands aren’t cooperating with knitting right now, so I’m taking a break… and have been for quite a while now....

You’ve gotten so quiet. It’s noticeable.
What’s going on with your hands?

Bergli, I hope you get well soon and that your hands will be better again soon.

I recently joined the front and back pieces together with a cable. It wasn’t all that easy, since the needles kept slipping, but I really like the result.

I’m not doing much needlework at the moment.... My hands often go numb at night, especially when I use them a lot—particularly when I’m knitting

I’ve knitted this coat twice—once in blue and once in natural-colored yarn

I knitted my scarf with a mix of cable patterns while on vacation.

I knitted this jacket a few years ago off the cuff, using really expensive yarn for the first time. Unfortunately, my washing machine and I had different ideas about what “hand wash” meant, so the jacket came out felted and two sizes smaller…. But I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away, so now my mannequin wears this jacket in the winter….

Oh yeah..... it’s going great 😁 I’m currently knitting a shawl that also features a cable pattern, among other things

Here, an I-cord is “threaded” through the cable—once all the way around—and then the ends are sewn together....
I love cables; you can knit such beautiful things with them.... or “paint” pictures.... There are just sooooo many possibilities....

Hey Petra, this cable-knit front and back are just great. Did you knit the pieces separately or both at the same time?

The blue coat is a dream 😍
And the amazing photos you all have here—they’re incredible!

This is my first and only sweater with a cable pattern:

That was back when I was a teenager. I hardly ever wore it—it’s just not very stylish. I only added the cable patterns because I wanted to learn how to do them.
It was only the second sweater I’d ever made.

@RechteMasche  I had to double-check 🤣

I had both pieces on my needles at the same time

Your sweater looked great. Did you knit the motif into the fabric or embroider it on later?

I’m working on various cable patterns again…this one’s going to be a poncho 😉

Unfortunately, I had to unravel this again after it was three times as big, because it wouldn’t form a straight top edge—it looked more like a kite…

That was another attempt that’s now back to being a ball of yarn…
The cable was too stretched out and curled back on itself…*sigh*

Another victim of my unraveling frenzy…the first stitch next to the purl stitches just didn’t look right…

Yeah, knitting for me is all trial and error…
But I usually find my way after looooots of tries…

(And that’s despite the mistakes along the edge…the kids didn’t care about those when using them as doll blankets…I WANTED to rip it out 😂)

Yes, attempts often end up getting unraveled. But thankfully, not always.

@Nina, I imagine it’s totally exciting to have so many cables on the needles at the same time. But I haven’t dared to try it yet, since the cables always end differently—I’m worried I’ll get the rows mixed up.

I also tried my hand at quite a few cables this winter. Arm warmers were great projects for that.

I liked this flat cable pattern best. Right now, I’m thinking about making a hat to go with it.

@Petra:
For the mustard yellow, I make the mini pseudo-cables (they’re really just 2 crossed stitches) in every right side row. And I just make the really big cables every other time I cable the middle section 😂

Sorry, I couldn’t fit it all into one reply
1. Front photo with a button placket, a cable pattern in the middle of the sleeves, and the raglan is also a cable pattern; 2. Photo: back with a wide cable pattern
This jacket keeps me wonderfully warm in today’s foggy, -8-degree weather 😊

I’m still happily experimenting with cables on my own…
Since I’m currently knitting a little cardigan for my middle daughter but wasn’t sure about the pattern, I knitted a test strip with these different versions. And in the end, I ended up knitting it a little differently after all. *laughs*
I’m not done with it yet, but I’ll share the result when it’s finished.

Looks great....

I treated myself to the book “Knitted Cable Sourcebook” by Norah Gaughan 😊
There are some really beautiful patterns in it, some of which are quite complex.

Hey there... it’s so quiet here right now...

How are your cables coming along? I cast on yesterday—twice, actually—so I’m knitting two projects at once. It’s going to be “The Dragon Lady Tahesha”... 64 stitches, 98 rows, 78 of which are cables—both the right-side and wrong side rows 🙈
I’ve never knitted an I-cord cable before....

The first 16 rows....
