I’m getting desperate with the hands. 
Chain 9.
1. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 7 sc, 3 sc in one stitch, 7 sc, 3 sc in one stitch = 20 sts ????
I’ve already used up the 9 chain stitches with 7 sc and 3 in 1... am I misunderstanding something here?

How do I fit all these stitches into 9 chain stitches?
I’m totally overwhelmed right now.

I think you continue crocheting along the underside

then there will be exactly 20 stitches

Thank you so much for your help—of course, why didn’t I think of that? “Underside” is the magic word. Sometimes you really just sit there like you’re facing the wall... ;-)
