Buttonholes on a jacket—horizontal or vertical?

Hi everyone,
I’m currently knitting a thick (felted) jacket and am wondering which of the two buttonhole options is better.
I plan to use large buttons, about 4 to 5 cm in diameter.

I’d make the buttonholes horizontal—that way, the button won’t pop right out if it gets a little tighter because you’re wearing a thick sweater or something underneath.

Thank you so much—I’m confident this will work out.
I made this pattern a few years ago, but back then—for whatever reason—I used vertical buttonholes. Why make it hard when there’s an easier way? :-)

Just for fun, I took a look at the buttonholes on my jackets: they’re all horizontal.

On blouses and shirts, the buttonholes are vertical, but on jackets and coats they’re usually horizontal
