Help with Poncho with Cable

Hi everyone
I purchased the “Poncho with Cable” pattern, but I’m stuck on the instructions.
Cable pattern description:
Row 1: Place 5 stitches on a cable needle... I understand that part
Knit 19 rows as the stitches appear?
Does that mean I have to knit 19 rows like that, or up to the 19th row (18 rows)?

Further on in the pattern:
Cross the stitches on every 20th row
What am I supposed to knit there???

I don’t have the pattern, but I think you knit 19 rows without the cable and then work the cable on the 20th row, just like in the 1st row.
Then knit another 19 rows without the cable and work the cable again on the 20th row. That way, you work the cable every 20th row.

I understand it the same way Michaela does.

“As the stitches appear” means: if the stitch you’re currently knitting was a purl stitch in the previous row (as seen from your side), you knit a purl stitch there again; and if it was a knit stitch, you knit a knit stitch.

Thank you very much for your messages.
That means a cable pattern actually spans 21 rows.
Row 1: cable
Rows 2–20: knit as they appear = 19 rows
Row 21: cable again

Does that mean Row 21 is the start of the next cable (like Row 1)?

No, the pattern runs over 20 rows. You have to subtract the first row with the cable, so to speak. The repeat begins with the 19 rows and ends with the 20th row, where you cable again. Then you start over: knit 19 rows, cable on the 20th row, and so on.
Does the pattern perhaps have a close-up image where you can count the rows?

Thank you. Unfortunately, there isn’t a detailed picture, but I’ll draw one for myself and then knit a test swatch first.
