Problem with crochet chart

Hi everyone,

I’m still a relative beginner and am having trouble with the following pattern:

Blue Velvet Scarf on the first page.

Can you explain to me what the “x” means in the crochet chart? At first, I thought it meant to work two single crochets together, followed by a chain stitch, and so on. But then, in the next round, wouldn’t I have to work into the “x” instead of the chain stitch so that all the double crochet pairs are stacked on top of each other?! Unfortunately, I’m not skilled enough yet to figure it out from the photo :(

Hi Miri,

X = 1 single crochet

So, for the 2nd row: 1 single crochet, 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet, etc.

Oh, okay, thanks. I’d always thought a line meant a single crochet, so I wasn’t sure. So it really is just a single crochet worked into two double crochets after all? Thanks—you’ve already helped me a lot, so I feel much more confident now :)

Don’t let the crochet chart confuse you :-)

Row 2: 1 single crochet in every 2nd stitch

So: 1 single crochet, 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in the next-but-one stitch, 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in the next-but-one stitch, and so on.
