Edit Michaela: 2nd image removed

Hello everyone ????

I'm a complete crochet beginner, I'm making my very first crocheted animal and could use your help with a pattern! I doooon't understand at all what this means; maybe you could explain it to me in a way that's a bit easier to understand!? ; ) )
I'm sending you a photo!

THANKS in advance! :- ) )

Best, Karin

Can you read what’s in the photo?
It says: “Crochet 15 rows with the purple yarn, then make one stitch, another stitch to increase, and repeat that 24 times. Then continue crocheting with the beige yarn. Don’t weave in the purple yarn—just leave it hanging on the outside.”
I don’t understand what’s meant by the individual stitches, the increase stitch, and repeating it 24 times!??
So far, I’ve just been crocheting single crochet stitches in rounds...

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but even with the turtle, I can’t tell where the 24 stitches are. Isn’t it mentioned later what happens to the 24 stitches—I’m guessing those are large loops? Are they mentioned anywhere else?

You wrote: “Crochet 15 rows with the purple yarn”—but to me, the body looks like it’s crocheted in rounds. Which part of the body are you crocheting those 15 rows for?

Hi,

to me it sounds like you’re supposed to double every stitch.
Do you have 25 stitches in the last round?
If so, that would mean you crochet 2 sc in each stitch and end
up with 50 stitches.

That’s how I’d interpret it.

But as WollwunderPetra already wrote, it looks like the
purple section is crocheted in rounds and not in rows.

Best regards, Heike

Hi, here’s how I see it.

The turtle is crocheted in the round. You increase in every round, and by the last purple round, you’ll have 48 stitches.
Then you’ll probably work only into the back loop and double every stitch = 96 stitches.
Now the lower part of the body is crocheted in beige. In the first round, insert the hook into the front loop—48 stitches—and then decrease regularly again.
Karin, how about taking a look at the free patterns here on CP?
There are similar turtles there, and you could practice with those first.
I’m sure these patterns are explained better, and the authors are happy to help if you have any questions.

I see it the same way as Wollefaden. The pattern is written quite vaguely. First of all, it says “rounds” and not “rows”—that’s actually a difference!
I agree with Wollefaden’s advice: Since you’re a beginner, try a few free patterns from here.
Now, about your problem:
In the second-to-last purple round, you have 48 stitches. Then you crochet 2 single crochets into each stitch, but only into the front loop. This creates the little ridge you see in the picture of the finished turtle. Leave the yarn hanging.
Then continue crocheting with beige. Now look for the back loops (which you didn’t crochet into earlier) and insert the hook there—that’s another 48 stitches. And then decrease regularly again.

Wow, thank you so much for all your replies—they came so fast :-))
You’re right, I could look through some patterns here; they’re probably explained better!
But your tips have already helped me—I’ll try it out with the front and back loops!
I’ll post a photo if it turns out okay ;)
Best regards

Hi Karin,

I’ve removed the second image because it contained excerpts from the pattern.
For copyright reasons, that’s not allowed—nor are external links.
You may quote the part you don’t understand, but please limit it to an excerpt and don’t post the entire text of the pattern.

Best regards,
Michaela
