Knitting stitch pattern vs. knitting pattern

Hi,
what exactly is the difference between a knitting stitch pattern and a knitting pattern? I have my own idea, but I keep seeing these terms used in mixed contexts here and there. Sometimes stitch patterns are referred to as patterns, and sometimes patterns as stitch patterns.

Does anyone have a definition of both terms handy?

I think it’s just a difference in how the terms are used.
I’d define a “stitch pattern” as a chart (knitting chart with symbols) or a written-out version of the actual pattern, while “knitting pattern” refers to the entire guide.
But that’s just my own definition.

that's about what I thought too. So a knitting motif is probably a chart, and a pattern has more text and pictures—well, just like a pattern :-)

Well, there’s also something like a crochet chart. It uses all those abbreviations so that people who can read a crochet chart can quickly recreate it without any additional pictures. But not everyone can read a crochet chart.
