Chain stitches—why they’re called what they’re called

I’ve always wondered why chain stitches are called what they are.
And now I know: they’re called that because, as a foundation chain, they hang in the air at first—meaning they aren’t connected to anything else, not even another row of stitches.

I (or anyone else) could
probably have figured that out on my own, but hey, as long as you can look things up, you don’t have to keep them in your head :)

If you take a step to the left or right every now and then, you won’t be so slow on the uptake anymore. =)

But I’m actually pretty sure we don’t have to be more Catholic than the Pope, so your theory about chain stitches and your cast-on tip can coexist just fine.
