Good morning, Heike,
Hmmmm, maybe my approach when I’m in your situation will help you:
I sit down in the middle of my yarn stash, and usually one part of the stash catches my eye more than another. I take that part with me to the sofa. Then I pick out a skein and just try out some random stitch pattern with it to see how it turns out. I’m happy to quickly set that aside and try the next one. And in the process, I realize right away what I’m not in the mood for at the moment.
It goes on like that—one thing leads to another. I enjoy this process—is there anything better than having a great selection of yarn around me and the freedom to choose what to do with it?
And in the end, it turns into something completely different… lol. I think it’s wonderful, and—of course—I end up with lots of swatches and UFOs this way, but that’s just part of it for me.
Enjoy this luxury—I hope you have fun experimenting.
Maybe you should just sit out in the sun with a nice cup of coffee, look through all your patterns, and think about which ones you might still use this summer (shirt, skirt, jacket, tablecloth, bag...). Set aside the winter items (hats, scarves, sweaters, blankets...) for now. Then take those patterns over to your yarn cabinet and think about what colors you’d use for each one. I bet something will catch your eye that you’ll want to start right away.
A try is worth it ;-)
I usually take a day off, quite deliberately. But I just have too many projects on my mind. That’s stressful too.
But then I consciously tell myself, “Today is a rest day, no Crazypatterns.” When’s the next birthday? Maybe you can score some points with something cute for it?
I would simply use a quiet moment and sit down—if the weather is nice, outside—and let your gaze wander!
Maybe a pretty butterfly is flying by right then? Or a particularly beautiful flower is blooming...
Or in the house, the table is missing a pretty tablecloth, the window somehow needs that "special something"...
Or maybe one of the children "reeeeally" needs a new tunic, a few bows...?!?!
And if none of that helps: leave the crochet hook alone for a few days, and instead get some inspiration from a crochet book or online in blogs, on Facebook, or here on CP!
Since my daughter’s friends often ask for various vouchers for their birthdays, and I find it too boring to just hand over an envelope, I crochet a little something for each girl to go with it. I often make them in advance. These can be little amigurumis, bag charms, bookmarks, or similar items. That way, I use up my leftover yarn, the girls are happy, and these little projects don’t take long, so they don’t end up as UFOs.....
You can’t force it! The new project you’ll be starting soon is already waiting for you. But it won’t reveal itself until you’re ready for it. After every finished project, I put all the yarn and tools back in their places. Everything away, everything empty. I then take care of other things that I’ve neglected up until then. That’s how I switch off from my crafts. And then the brilliant idea comes to me, and I know exactly what I want to make next. So personally, I need a little mental break from the previous project. After that, I’m ready for the next one. So don’t think of it as a crochet slump, but rather as preparation for the next project.
Hi, Heike,
I went through a phase like that just a few days ago. I decided to put it aside for a while and finish writing up the pattern for my last project. No sooner had I finished than it happened: I realized that I don’t like tight-fitting shirts right now and would rather have looser, longer tops… (menopause strikes again—grin).
Best wishes,
Traudelina
