This crochet pattern is driving me crazy......

Hey,
I really need help... I’m totally stuck on this pattern. Can someone please explain how I’m supposed to crochet this?
It’s crocheted in rounds and will be an amigurumi.

4. *Increase 3 sc, 1 sc in the next 4 sts*, repeat three times, increase 3 sc, 1 sc in the next 3 sts

I understand the * and that it means to repeat. But what does the comma mean in this pattern? Are these multiple steps?

As I interpret it, there are 2 steps:
Crochet 3 sc into the first st as an increase, followed by 4 sc, <<<< repeat this 3 times.
There should be 4 sts left in the round, since the first st is increased with 3 sc and the remaining 3 sts each have 1 sc.

Were there 24 sts in the previous round, and are there supposed to be 34 after this round?

So I would interpret it like this:

Increase 3 sc, i.e. work 2 sc in each of 3 sts = 6 sts, then 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts (= 10 sts total), repeat this 3 times = 40 sts total,
then work 2 sc in each of 3 sts (6 sts), 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts (= all sts in this round = 49 sts)

thanks for your reply. The pattern is from Dawanda and was a free pattern... no author given

After the 3rd round, I have 20 stitches, and after that, there should be 28 stitches... so that means I’m only supposed to increase 8 stitches :-\/

So unfortunately, your advice can’t be right, can it? ....Phew! Or does anyone have another pattern for an amigurumi whale? I’d like to make a baby mobile.

I’d like to point out here that sharing or exchanging CP patterns for free is not permitted.

In that case, “increase 3 sc” means you crochet three single crochets into one single crochet—that’s how the increases work out. So you do the part between the asterisks three times in total, followed by what comes next. But something’s still off with the stitch count. Is there maybe a chain stitch at the beginning of the round that counts as the first stitch?
