how can I view the most popular patterns? I mean the most popular among the free patterns. Is it possible to filter them to show only crochet or knitting patterns?

The free patterns can’t be filtered by “knitting” or “crocheting.” Because there are only a few of them, the patterns are combined into one category. You can find the most popular free patterns (for everything: crocheting, knitting, sewing, etc.) here, for example: https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/kostenlos/top 

You can sort the patterns (in any category) as shown in the image below.
