Problem with puff stitches in the magic ring

Hi,
I downloaded a comfort blanket pattern from this site because I’d like to crochet it for a friend. The pattern is called SCHNUFFELTUCH ESEL I-AH and was created by kreativ_mit_Herz_by_JH.


Now to my problem: I’m having trouble with the middle section—I’ve already ripped everything out four times. Has anyone here crocheted this comfort blanket before? I’m supposed to crochet it using puff stitches in a magic ring and then increase as usual, but mine isn’t turning out flat—it’s more like a funnel.
