Dear community,
Which crochet and knitting techniques use a particularly large amount / comparatively little yarn?

CROCHET:

Low: mesh patterns with chain-stitch arches or square patterns, Solomon’s knot, moss stitch

High: almost all patterns with post double crochet

Crocheting generally uses more yarn than knitting. The stitches in crochet are coarser, while in knitting they are finer and create a more delicate texture.
But each technique has its own charm. You simply can’t compare them directly.

Loose lace patterns, with their airy, open structures, are ideal for summer projects and use relatively little yarn. Fork crocheting is particularly interesting here: thanks to the characteristic loops it creates, you can get by with surprisingly little material. As far as I know, this technique was actually developed for this very reason—so that even small leftovers of yarn or wool can be put to good use and, above all, used to create something decorative.
Here’s a good example: I fork-crocheted this scarf using just 75 g of wool.

Anyone who’s ever made pom-poms knows they use up a lot of yarn. But it’s fun (even for kids), and it’s a great way to put your leftover yarn to good use.

Best regards, Ina

Yes, that’s true—bobbles or pom-poms require a lot of yarn. For example, the little panda (12 cm tall to the tips of its ears) uses almost 50 g of white yarn.

Yes, and of course, crocheting uses more yarn than knitting. That’s why summer sweaters are usually knitted—it’s wonderfully quick and uses very little yarn while creating pretty, airy patterns.

;-) and of course pompoms have nothing to do with crochet and knitting techniques — that was a digression from the topic.

When knitting, the dropped stitch pattern uses less yarn and the project grows quickly. 😊

You don’t have to limit yourselves to crochet and knitting techniques—if you can think of other projects that use up yarn, feel free to share them.

It depends on the pattern.
I crocheted this little bag with this checkered pattern—it was a real “yarn guzzler.” Double crochet pattern

You kind of crochet the round twice.
Whatever. I’m definitely happy with the result.

When knitting, you generally use less yarn with lace patterns, and of course when working with relatively thin yarn and relatively thick needles. Mohair yarn, for example, works quite well for this. Lately, it’s also often combined with other yarns to create a thicker knit that’s still not too heavy. There are now countless examples of such projects.

When I was a kid, we’d cut up all our colorful leftover yarn into strands and weave them into colorful pillow panels. The advantage was that you could use up all your scraps and didn’t need to have a specific amount of yarn on hand beforehand. I only have photos of it in my head—unfortunately, none in real life.

Best regards, Ina

P.S. Andrea, your colorful little bag turned out lovely, especially with the little fruit decoration—a real “feel-good bag.”

In my experience, popcorn stitches also use up quite a lot of yarn.

Weaving doesn’t use too much yarn either, since you can use a different yarn for the warp—very often, the warp is made from thin cotton yarn.

I’ve heard that the true patent stitch is also a real yarn guzzler.

Mosaic crochet is also a real yarn guzzler.
Other than that, I can only agree: post double crochet uses a lot of yarn—I always ran out of yarn on my first projects using this technique.
