🧶 Hat and headband season is family time—who else is crocheting away right now?

As soon as the first cold days arrive, I crochet new hats and headbands every year—for the playground, the walk to school, or the first stroll through rustling leaves. 🍂

This year, I even added a headband that matches my favorite scarf perfectly—I hadn’t planned it at all, but sometimes the most beautiful combinations just happen on their own. 😄

 I’m curious:
✨ What colors are dominating for you this season?
✨ Do you prefer to crochet simple designs—or do you like to add patterns or a bit of fluff every now and then?
✨ And: Have you ever designed a matching accessory to go with an existing project?

I’m curious to see what you’re working on right now—why not show off your current projects or tell us what you’re planning for fall and winter!

Dear Franziska,

Yes, the topic of hats and scarves comes up every year. You actually have enough. But the moment you get a new winter jacket, you need new accessories.

Last year I bought myself a (rather dark) green quilted coat. Of course, I still need something to cover my head and neck to go with it. But I haven’t gotten any further than recognizing that need yet.

And the grandkids need new things to keep them warm every year, too. They’re still growing, so they simply outgrow their hats. But they don’t want anything knitted or crocheted. It has to be made of colorful fabric. Not just any fabric, but one they like. So I have to ask them.

For my 3-year-old granddaughter, I just found a beautiful, soft, warm remnant of Alpine fleece with glitter on eBay. The next time I visit, I’ll measure her head, and then I’ll sew her a new hat and a new neck warmer. I can show you the fabric already:

Best regards, Ina

Dear Ina,

Thank you for your message. The fabric is lovely; I’m sure my daughter would like it too.

Best regards
Franziska

Ina, the fabric is lovely. That’s definitely going to be a great hat. I’ve never sewn one before. Mostly knitted, less often crocheted.

I always enjoy having a new hat or wrist warmers now and then. I usually design a new pattern to go with them. Right now I’m working on wrist warmers; I’ve already designed several accessories from this pattern. A vicious cycle — new wrist warmers then need a matching hat, and the new hat wants a matching scarf.

For the family, I only make things to order now. But then I’m happy to do it.

Are there any patterns for those, by any chance? 😊

Dear Petra, those are lovely men’s designs. Men have specific requirements, so you can’t be as creative with colors and patterns as you can with women’s designs.

My family and I now prefer fabric hats and scarves. With knitted hats, we always had the problem that the wind whistled through the stitches—even though I used thick yarn and knitted tightly. To fix this, I started sewing a fleece band shaped like a headband into the children’s knitted hats—you can buy fleece bands made specifically for this purpose. That was supposed to protect their ears better. But of course, it was kind of a hassle.

Ever since I’ve learned to sew, though, we’ve preferred the sewn hats. I can make them right away using two layers of fabric. On the outside, my chosen favorite fabric, and on the inside, something soft and warm in a matching shade. That way, the wind definitely won’t blow through. Here are last year’s creations:
