Photo printing

May I ask you the following question:

I’m crocheting a hexagon jacket for my daughter out of acrylic yarn. I’d like to add a photo print of a dragon to the back. Is that possible with acrylic yarn, or do I need to use cotton for that? Do you also have any suggestions on where I could go to have it printed?

Does the photo print need to be ironed on with heat? If so, I wouldn’t do it—not with acrylic, nor with cotton. Acrylic could melt, and the structure of both materials would change.
Plus, the crocheted fabric is probably fairly stretchy, so the print would tear.
Wouldn’t it be a better option to embroider something instead? Using the same yarn (in a different color, of course) or a similar yarn of the same thickness would certainly look great.
Alternatively, if you only need to add a border around the kites, you could crochet or use a knitting dolly to make some cord and sew it on accordingly.

What comes to mind is “having dragons printed on fabric, cutting out the outlines, and sewing them onto the jacket.”
Maybe that would be an option.

There are so many fabric appliqués available these days. I would just sew one of those on. 
Since something crocheted doesn’t have a firm structure, anything ironed on would quickly lose its shape.
