Fuzzy yarn—my new favorite discovery

Hi everyone,

I’ve really gotten into fluffy yarn lately. 😍 A lot of people shy away from it because it seems hard to work with—but I’ve found that it works wonderfully when combined with a smooth yarn. You can see the stitches better, and at the same time, you get this great, soft effect.
My current favorite example is my hedgehog basket, where the spines are made from fuzzy yarn. 🦔 This makes it look instantly cozy and gives it that classic “hedgehog look.”
Now I’m curious:

  • What experiences have you had with fuzzy yarn?
  • Do you have any tips or favorite projects where it looks especially nice?
  • Or do you maybe even have ideas for where else to use fuzzy yarn?

I think it’s totally worth giving it a try—the effect amazes me every single time. ✨

Best regards, Franziska

Dear Franziska,
I think fluffy yarn is great, too. I find it easier to work with when knitting than when crocheting. I once tried running a thread alongside the work on a figure so I could see the stitches better. But my figure ended up turning out relatively large. So here’s my question: What yarn do you use for this?

Thanks and best regards
Sigrid

I love fluffy yarn, too! I’ve already made quite a few stuffed animals with it. I like to use Lenja Baby Smiles by Schachenmayr and filet yarn as an accent thread. That way, the figure doesn’t turn out too big.

Hi Sigrid,

When working with fuzzy yarn, I actually try not to carry the color along, but instead to work deliberately with stitches worked into the back loop and front loop. This is a wonderful way to add accents. And when you join the fuzzy yarn again in this way, it’s also relatively easy to work with because you can see the stitches clearly.

 Best regards,
Franziska

But I’m sure filet yarn would also work well as an accent yarn; I agree with Ruth on that.

Fuzzy yarn really isn’t my thing, but I hadn’t even thought of the idea with the accompanying thread. We’ll see—maybe I’ll give fuzzy yarn another chance.
