I just got back from my shopping trip and have to share my amazement with you. At Kik, where I wanted to buy a bit of decorative stuff, they were just restocking the shelves. Out with the summer stuff and in with the Santa Clauses. It was 30 degrees outside, and inside there were Christmas decorations. The saleswomen were fanning themselves because it was so hot in the store, and they were putting away the nautical summer decorations and putting out the snowmen and Christmas ornaments. Even in the clothing section, there were thick, fluffy winter sweaters. I don’t like that. It dampened my “summer feeling.” What do you think about the Christmas shopping season?
I haven’t seen any gingerbread in the supermarkets yet, but I’m sure it won’t be long now.
Well, I’m relatively tolerant when it comes to gingerbread. It shows up in our supermarkets around Oktoberfest time (after all, gingerbread hearts are sold at Oktoberfest, too). But Christmas decorations and winter clothes? Autumn is just around the corner! Are there really people who are buying that stuff already? Yes, if you’re making something yourself or doing crafts, that’s different—that takes time, after all. But ready-made items? No, thanks!
Then they’re completely missing out on the Halloween decor business! Unless someone has mixed up the boxes. 🤣
I’m totally relaxed about the sweets—I don’t like most of them anyway—but I’m also quite capable of baking Spitzbuben cookies at 30 degrees if I feel like it.
Our Kik store is pretty big. Next to the Christmas items, there were also several life-size skeletons lined up—I guess those are for Halloween. Just a colorful mix.
Oh no, gingerbread at 30 degrees in the shade while wearing flip-flops. I can only shake my head. You can’t build up any anticipation for Christmas like this. What do you think little kids standing in front of the shelf are thinking? How do you explain to them as a parent that it’s summer right now and Christmas is still a long way off? And now we have to put up with this sight for months on end—or just tune it out. Terrible!
Yeah, the prices always shock me, too. The other day, as I was walking by, I tossed a bag of crunchy flakes into my shopping cart because I like them. I quickly glanced back over my shoulder at the price tag. I stood there in disbelief and had to take a closer look at the price tag. A 270-gram bag of Knusperflocken (which everyone knows is mostly made of crispbread crumbs) cost 4.49 euros. I took the bag right back out of my cart. I don’t need that!
That sounds like a new record! All I can do is shake my head and say: Those Romans are crazy!
It really bothers me when Christmas decorations start taking over in early October and everything starts glittering and glowing everywhere. I’m curious to see when the first gingerbread and Christmas cookies show up in our supermarkets!
