What is rib knit fabric and what can you make with it?

Ribbed cuff fabric is a knitted fabric that can be used to sew sleeve cuffs and hem bands. You can also use jersey instead to make your cuffs. But you can also use ribbed cuff fabric for sweaters and the like—for example, I used some ribbed cuff fabric as the side panel in my red sweatshirt dress. I once sewed a pair of house booties for my sister out of navy blue ribbed cuff fabric. As you can see, good-quality ribbed cuff fabric is very versatile

For my doll fashion project, I made the neckbands once with jersey and once with “real ribbed fabric.” The difference is quite significant. Both work, but the ribbed fabric is much more stretchy and snaps back tighter. That’s why, if you want a cuff that’s really snug yet very stretchy, I tend to go with real ribbed fabric. It is, however, sturdier and thicker. I really like it for waistbands.



On the other hand, if you just want the cuff to serve as a decorative trim without much functional purpose, jersey is enough for me. After all, it’s stretchy too. In the next picture, you’ll see that I sewed all the cuffs (neck, sleeves, legs) using stretchy cotton jersey.
