KamSnaps

Hi everyone,

I’m currently sewing a bolero out of cotton jersey. I want to add a KamSnap as a closure at the top of the neckline. Since this snap will definitely be under constant strain, I obviously don’t want the fabric to tear. The pattern only includes a general sentence: “Now reinforce the ‘corners’ on the front piece by about 4x4 cm so that you can easily attach the button, including the buttonhole, or the KamSnap/snap later on.”

My question for the experts ... how exactly do I reinforce the spot where the KamSnap will go? Between the neckband (2 layers) and the hem (2 layers), there are already 4 layers of cotton jersey at the spot where the snap is supposed to go. And how exactly is the reinforcement attached? It’s not supposed to be visible. Is it placed between the fabric layers and ironed on?

Ina, a small piece of plain cotton fabric is often enough for reinforcement; it’s attached directly under the Kam Snap. That’s how I always do it—but then there are 5 layers of fabric, and I doubt the Kam Snap can hold them all, based on my own painful experience, because one side of the Kam Snap always pops out. A regular snap or those baby snaps would be better. Or just a buttonhole and button. It’s best if you test whether the Kam Snap can hold up to all those layers, and then decide how to proceed.

Dear Inge, thank you so much for your reply. I’ll make a test piece and then try out the different options. I probably won’t use a regular button, because a 2-year-old will surely be tempted to try to get it off somehow.
