What do you really need to get started with crocheting? Basically, shouldn’t you be able to start with just a crochet hook, yarn, and scissors? I’m sure you have a few extras. Is that right?

honestly? No, there’s no “secret gimmick” for crocheting 😂
A crochet hook and suitable yarn—that’s basically all you need. Even scissors and a darning needle are “luxuries” that you don’t really need.

That’s the beauty of crocheting—you can get by with just a few supplies! Stitch markers might be useful for beginners—although… I always use a different-colored thread that I loop between the stitches instead.

Yeah, yeah, that’s true, buuuut.... 🤣
In terms of variety (aside from the massive stash of yarn), you can stock up on all kinds of hook sizes—with ergonomic handles, straight handles, made of bamboo, wood, metal, or plastic, or even without a handle at all. And there are even light-up crochet hooks.

I use a stitch marker to keep my work secure while traveling and a scrap of yarn to mark the start of a round.
I also always have scissors, a yarn needle, and a measuring tape with me. And a few extra crochet hooks, too. You never know... 😄

Should we even say “need”? I think “helpful” or “useful” fits better.

For me, it depends on the project. For crochet projects consisting of several individual pieces that are then assembled, safety pins and straight pins are definitely worth their weight in gold.

And since I’m a bit of a mess, it’s almost essential for me to use different bags or baskets for the various projects I start at the same time, so nothing gets mixed up.

Well, the right crochet hook, nice yarn, a great pattern, my reading glasses for some projects, and a delicious drink. Then set your phone to silent, and off you go.

I also keep my individual projects stashed away in little bags. Because I’m always juggling a bunch of projects at once 🫣.
For my figures, stitch markers are really helpful. I use them to temporarily join the individual elements together. It’s super handy. I don’t know what I’d do without them.
