Sewing box pleats

how can you make sewing box pleats easier?

Sewing box pleats is actually really easy.
I have a free pattern on this in my shop.
Basically, you just need to measure, mark, and pin them well—that’s really all there is to it.
And box pleats are always very decorative and add volume without adding bulk.

Nina described this very well. I’ll add two examples. These two little dresses were the very first ones I ever sewed. And there’s a box pleat in the middle. Even as a sewing beginner, I was able to manage it well. The dress opens out at the pleat, giving it more width at the bottom. This is especially nice for children’s dresses because it doesn’t constrict the little ones so much and also looks playful.

Both dresses use the same pattern—the one above is for winter, made from summer sweat fabric, and the one below is for summer, made from cotton jersey.

You can really make the box pleat stand out by topstitching the edges with either a color-coordinated thread, a decorative thread, or a specialty thread. Depending on the size of the box pleat—anywhere from just under 1 mm to 5 mm—this looks really great. BUT this topstitching doesn’t work everywhere, so I’ll leave it out unless I’m absolutely sure it’s the right choice.
