Sewing a Patchwork Runner

Dear users, dear designers,
I found this here in the shop. I think this runner is simply wow. I asked the designer by PM how long it takes to finish the runner. Maybe she’d like to share something about that.
Has any of you already sewn a project like this, or would you like to do so?

Hi Josefa and all you sewers,
it’s been a while since I sewed these table runners, and unfortunately I can’t remember exactly how many hours it took me. Sewing the strips together goes quickly, and sewing the individual pieces together isn’t a problem for experienced sewers, though it does require some attention when aligning the pieces. Most of the time at the beginning was spent cutting out the pieces. After all, you had to cut out all the pieces twice—once from light to dark and then from dark to light.
I used a little trick to help me out. Before cutting, I placed the strips that had been sewn together at the beginning on top of each other, right sides together. That means the first piece lies on the table with the dark stripes on the left side. On top of that, I placed the other piece with the light stripes on the left side. To keep it from shifting, I taped it together with thin strips of double-sided tape. But be careful—the strips must be able to be peeled off without leaving any residue after cutting.
You really do need to set aside some time for this, especially if you also want to sew the corners along the edge. I think the result is worth taking the time for.

Best regards, Christl

It looks really great, but I don’t think I could pull it off.

To cut out a table runner like this easily, you should get a 9° ruler. I’ve sewn spiral table runners like this myself before.

I also made two placemats and a mug rug using the 9° ruler—they were made from old bed linens. :-)
Then I sewed two more wall hangings using the 9° ruler—as you can see, you can make quite a few things with it. But I haven’t done any patchwork for a few years now; I’ve sewn so many of these items and given them away, so I figure it’s time to call it quits.

Best regards, Inge

Wow! Is there actually anything you can’t do when it comes to sewing?

Yes, Veronika, that’s actually true—I don’t dare tackle wedding dresses or ball gowns, for example; my daughter can do that far better than I ever could. That’s really not my thing. We both always say she’s the precision engineer and I’m the clumsy one when it comes to sewing :-)))) ;-))
But that’s also due to our different training—she learned how to work with these fabrics and how they’re processed, which is the difference between a traditional women’s tailor and an industrial seamstress

Best regards, Inge
