Sewing a Jacket Pocket

Is it difficult to sew pockets onto jackets?

It really depends on what kind of pocket you’re making. Patch pockets are relatively easy—you measure the pocket size, cut it out, and then attach it depending on the design. You can attach the pocket with either open or hidden seam allowances. Then there are in-seam pockets, where the pocket bag is sewn into the side seam—that’s also relatively easy. It gets tricky when you need to make a welt or piped pocket—that requires very precise work, because you have to cut a slit in the jacket or coat where the welt or piping and the two pocket pieces are then incorporated. Neither of those pocket styles is really my thing—I know how to do them, but I don’t like them because they’re just so time-consuming.

That sounds pretty complicated and not really suitable for beginners.

Josefa is right, and that’s why there’s a profession called tailor—for both women’s and men’s fashion—where you’re taught, learn, and practice these skills over and over again. Although becoming a men’s tailor requires a separate apprenticeship.

How big are the differences between women’s and men’s tailoring?

Josefa, that really comes down to the differences in male and female anatomy. A men’s jacket requires a completely different cut than a women’s blazer—the same goes for pants.
My training focused on women’s outerwear (industrial tailor)—I’m a women’s outerwear tailor—and my oldest daughter trained as a women’s tailor in the trade.
I wouldn’t feel confident sewing a men’s jacket.
