Knitting a sweater / knitted sweater: tips?

let’s say a beginner wants to knit a sweater. Do you have any tips and experiences you’d like to share?

I’d recommend choosing a pattern that works up quickly.
So, not too complicated, but also not just garter stitch. Otherwise, it takes forever.
I also find raglan knitted from the top down to be very comfortable and promising, since you can easily adjust it to your own proportions or try it on every now and then. You can even just use knit stitches, because when knitted in the round, the piece will look like stockinette anyway. :-)
A medium-weight yarn for quick progress and easy handling is also recommended.

I knitted myself a sweater, too—a raglan started from the top, using hand-dyed yarn from our local yarn shop. It’s important to do a gauge swatch and wash it.
If you’re putting in that much effort, you should also make sure the yarn is good quality; otherwise, it won’t be fun for long. I used 6-ply sock yarn, and it was finished quickly.

Before I knew about this knitting technique, I had to recalculate the measurements for every sweater pattern to make sure the proportions were still right.
