Sun hat for men

Hi everyone,

I have an elderly neighbor (76). He spends all day outside in his garden. He has white skin cancer on his head (he no longer has any hair) and therefore wears a standard straw hat to protect himself from the sun. But it scratches his scalp. So he’s stuck band-aids all around the inside of the hat. But that’s not an ideal solution.

He also needs to protect his neck from the sun, so he’s started tucking a scarf under his straw hat, which makes him look like a sheikh. But the scarf keeps flapping around in his face while he works.

So we’ve been talking about whether there might be another solution. I want to try sewing him a sun hat with neck protection. I thought I’d definitely find what I’m looking for here on CP. But there are only patterns for kids, and even those just have a small peak in the front instead of a brim all the way around. So I’m looking for a pattern for a sun hat with a brim and neck protection for adults.

and then add a piece of fabric like that at the back of the neck?

Thanks, Ina—I’ll take a closer look at that tomorrow. There’s bound to be something out there on the vast, worldwide web. It’s a shame that no sewing designer here has come up with this idea yet. Since the sun’s rays are getting stronger all the time, there’s definitely a need for this among adults, too.
