Dear users, dear authors,
Would you like to share some tips on knitting edge stitches?

Here’s how I knit my edge stitches:

At the end of the row, I place the yarn in front of the work and just slip the stitch. After turning the work, I knit the stitch.

My edge looks very even this way, and I can easily see the individual stitches when it’s time to sew them together.

I think this is a simple way to get a nice edge.

Hey, I always knit the last stitch and slip the first one. Basically, it gives the same result as Petra’s method.
For my large blankets, I also like to use the knotted edge (knit the first and last stitches). When picking up stitches from the edge, it seems sturdier and less holey to me.
Best regards, Anja

I do it the same way Anja does—slip the first stitch, and always knit the last one.

I knit my edge stitches the same way Petra does; that gives a neat finish and the edge doesn’t look so *ragged* ;-)
I’m knitting my blanket diagonally, and right now I’m decreasing like this: I knit until there are only 3 sts left on the needle, slip the first stitch from the front, knit the 2nd stitch as usual, and then pass the slipped stitch over the knitted 2nd stitch. The last stitch is the edge stitch, and this is what the edge looks like:

Best regards, Inge

Oh, that looks great, Inge. I’ll have to try that!

I usually knit both the first and last stitch—knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows. At the beginning of the row, I always pull the yarn tight after the second stitch. That really does create a nice edge. I always found the slipped stitches too loose. But maybe I should give it another try.
I also like knitting a seed stitch edge.

I knit the edges in different ways.

  • Slip the first stitch, knit the last stitch
  • Garter stitch = 3 knit stitches at the beginning and end
  • Small seed stitch over 3 or 5 stitches at the beginning and end of the row
