Circular Knitting Needles: How Long Is Too Long?

Dear users, dear authors,
what do you need circular knitting needles for, and how long should they be at most so that the knitted piece is still manageable?

Hi, I knit everything with circular needles, even socks. It’s just more comfortable. I usually use 80 cm ones—they give me enough freedom of movement and are easy to grip. Unfortunately, with shorter circular needles, the tips are also shorter, and they don’t sit well in my hand anymore.
It also depends on the number of stitches. For my large blankets, I sometimes have as many as 250 stitches, so I use 120-cm-long needles.
Best regards, Anja

I also really enjoy knitting with circular needles. In fact, I almost never use any other kind.
My cable lengths vary from a short 30 cm to—for me—a long 100 cm.
Since I work with modular needles—that is, ones that screw onto different cables—I can also extend the cables using connectors if necessary.

I also really enjoy knitting with circular needles. I try to knit in the round as much as possible, since my stitch pattern looks nicer and more even when I knit only knit stitches or purl stitches.

As mentioned above, unfortunately, the tips do get shorter even with short circular needles. After a while, I start having problems with my fingers. Then I set it aside for a while and work on something else.

Otherwise, the length depends on what I have on the needle. I have needle tips and various cables, so I can mix and match. For a triangular shawl, it can end up being 120–150 cm long.

I also really enjoy knitting with circular needles—or with the CraSyTrio for small projects. 60 cm is my favorite length, but it depends on the project. I’ve never needed more than 80 cm so far, not even for larger projects.

I actually prefer to knit socks with straight needles. Right now, I’m using two 80-cm circular needles for my sweater, with half the stitches on each.
Any size is manageable—it’s not the needles that are the problem, but the weight of the knitting. You just can’t have too many or too few stitches on the needles.
I only have 80-cm needles myself, and I think I’ll probably buy more of those instead of other lengths.

Hi Sallyware, how do you knit socks on circular needles?
I’m new to knitting socks and don’t like using a set of double-pointed needles.
Looking forward to your reply.
Best regards, Wichtelheidi
