Knitting a Round Yoke

Hi, ladies!
I’d like to freestyle a sweater with a circular yoke using leftover yarn. Since I’ve never done this before, I’ve watched various videos, including ones on how to calculate everything. I still have a few questions.
1. What’s the advantage of starting with an invisible cast-on—that is, finishing the neckline later?
2. And are the sleeves then separated and worked later on, like with a top-down raglan?
3. When determining the width of the yoke, should I aim for it to extend from the neck to the chest (or beyond), or does it also matter how far it extends toward the arm (i.e., from the shoulder to the middle of the upper arm or so)?

Thanks in advance for your tips :-)

Wow, Anja, that’s a lot of questions that can’t be answered off the cuff.
But:

Regarding 1: For a sweater that’s supposed to fit well, this is definitely the better way to go. That way, you’ll have a high neckline in the back, but in the front, the sweater won’t sit right up against your neck. OOO, I hope you understand what I mean.

Regarding 2: Yes, it’s done the same way as with the regular RVO

Re 3: I can’t answer that. There are so many different ways to knit a sweater. Some people like an almost off-the-shoulder sweater (in which case you start almost right above the bust), while others prefer a high-necked one.

I’d say just get started. If the sweater is for you, you can always try it on, make adjustments… and so on.

In any case, have fun!

Hi,

It’s actually really simple. You already have the measurements.
After the neckband, work short rows if you want the back neckline to be higher.
If the yoke is long enough, check to see if you have enough width for the sleeves and body, and when you separate for the sleeves, cast on the additional stitches needed under the sleeves. This also improves the fit—round yokes tend to ride up a bit when you move.
After that, knit the sleeves and body as usual.
