Learning to knit with thicker yarn?

Is it easier for beginner knitters if they use thicker yarn?

Yes, it is. It’s also a good idea to choose a yarn that glides easily over the needles, such as cotton. I’d recommend needles between 3 and 5 mm in size, though this naturally depends on the yarn’s thickness. Wooden needles might feel a little more comfortable in your hands than metal ones. 

Thicker yarn that has been twisted makes it easier to learn to knit.
However, the yarn shouldn’t be too thick, or your fingers might get cramped.

I remember that my first knitting project was made with yarn that was very thick to me (I was 7 or 8)—probably for size 6 needles.
Shortly before her birthday, I taught my 8-year-old daughter to knit using yarn for size 7–8 needles, but with a size 5 plastic knitting needle.
It worked out well.
