Knitting as a Left-Handed Person

What should you keep in mind when knitting as a left-hander?

I just found out that I do the cast-on with my left hand. I had no idea. Most left-handers are ambidextrous anyway, and all stitches can be knitted from both the front and the back. That means right-handers and left-handers can work on the same piece, each on their own side. Or to put it another way: if the left-hander gets stuck, the right-hander simply knits all the purl stitches as if they were right-side stitches and all the knit stitches as if they were left-side stitches.

A little heads-up would be nice, though—otherwise you’ll drive your helper pretty close to despair. That already happened to me while knitting a sock heel. Neither of us knew that I was knitting purl—it was actually a mistake. She only realized it when she watched me knit from right next to me; you can’t tell that from sitting across from me.

My brain also automatically flips the illustrated instructions mirror-inverted without me noticing. I’m not sure what you’d need to keep in mind. Whether you knit left-handed or right-handed, with the yarn on the left or right, in front or behind, the result is the same.

At most, you could attach all the buttons and trims on the correct side—but then you wouldn’t be able to buy anything off the rack anymore. Otherwise, you’d have to learn to knit both ways again. Ultimately, as a left-hander, you always come up short.
