Knitting a Hat

Hi there,

I did learn to knit in school—it’s been a long time—and I’ve knitted a scarf or two in my life.
Now I’m working on a hat and I’m not sure how to proceed. Up to row 10, everything was described in detail: 2 chain stitches, then double crochet stitches with a few stitch increases, and finish each row with a slip stitch. No problem—it went like a charm.
But for rows 11–19, the instructions now say: 96 double crochet stitches per row.
No chain stitches at the beginning? No slip stitch at the end?
Maybe someone here can give me some advice.

maybe you could try contacting the person who wrote the pattern.

To me, it sounds like you’re supposed to crochet 96 double crochet stitches (without increases or decreases) in these rows, and since these are the rows in question, you should also start with the corresponding chain stitches and end with a slip stitch.

In many patterns, the general notes at the beginning state that—unless otherwise noted—you should always work a turning chain and a slip stitch, and this isn’t mentioned again in the rest of the instructions.

Thanks for the quick replies. I think I’ll just keep crocheting with chain stitches and slip stitches.
I guess that’s how it has to be.
