Shell Stitch

Hi everyone,

I’m currently crocheting a jacket.
The base row consists of 49 half double crochets, followed by a shell pattern, which, according to the crochet chart, is worked with 5 double crochets in one stitch and then 5 double crochets worked together. When I crochet it this way, the joined-together double crochets essentially create a hole. What’s also confusing me is the size of the pattern repeat, because it starts and ends right in the middle of the joined-together double crochets. How would you interpret the crochet chart?

The pattern repeat says that the pattern consists of 6 stitches.

You start with the stitches before the pattern repeat (1/2 shell) and end with the last stitches
(3 double crochets worked together).

In the second row, you work a double crochet in every stitch.

That can’t create a hole—you’re working a double crochet in every stitch.
