Help/question about the Toft pattern

Hello dear forum members,

I’m new to the forum and to Crazypatterns, and I’m also still a beginner at crocheting.

I need your advice on a current project.
I’m currently crocheting Blake the orangutan from Toft’s book “Edward’s Menagerie/Edward’s Cheeky Animal Parade.”
Thanks to Toft’s helpful video, I’m managing the loop stitches just fine.
Unfortunately, I have some unsightly gaps on the first leg.
The pattern says: Crochet every 3rd stitch in odd rounds and every 4th stitch in even rounds.
Did I misunderstand something there, or is it because of my yarn that I’m getting such large gaps in between?





Have any of you worked with this pattern before and can you give me a tip?
Should I just crochet every 2nd stitch in odd rounds and every 3rd stitch in even rounds instead?

thank you very much for welcoming me and for bumping this thread back up. :)

Unfortunately, the author is a person/company based in England. While I’m good at reading English and can figure out a lot from it, I’m unfortunately not very practiced at writing it. That’s why I wanted to try this approach first.
I suspect that it really is related to my yarn, and the yarn the author uses for her projects is an alpaca yarn that she produces herself, which is personally too expensive for me and not so easy to get in Germany.
Maybe someone here has had experience with this kind of thing and knows how to solve a problem like this.
