Winding gradient yarns

Hi everyone,
I go through a lot of yarn and would like to wind it myself. I have the winder and the cones, and I can calculate the yarn usage and yardage. However, my yarn cakes end up more round than square. I pay attention to the tension and make sure the yarn runs from the top, but once there’s about 70 g of yarn on the winder, the yarn cake starts to lose its shape. Can anyone give me some advice?
