gauge?

I just came across the term “gauge” for the first time in a knitting pattern.
Is gauge the same as counting all the stitches to see if they’re all there, or if there are too many or too few, or does it mean something else?


If so, I might be a bit confused right now.

It says that a gauge swatch involves not only counting the stitches while knitting, but also before you start.
You make a square or rectangle using the desired needles and yarn. The text says you should cast on 20 stitches and knit at least 5 cm in height. And, of course, use the pattern you’ll be working with later.
Once you’re done, you can measure how wide it is and then estimate how many stitches—or how much yarn—you’ll need for a sweater or another large knitting project.
There are also several videos included. I think it’s nicely written.

A gauge swatch definitely makes sense, especially for larger knitting projects.

The gauge is always listed on the yarn label, isn’t it? I don’t have one on hand right now, but I seem to recall that it always says how many stitches you need for a small square. You can then apply that to a sweater or something similar.

You should always make a gauge swatch before starting the actual project. That’s the only way to ensure that your finished piece will be the right size. The gauge swatch tells you how many stitches and rows make up a 10 x 10 cm square, since the entire pattern is calculated based on that. So, for example, if the pattern says that 25 stitches and 30 rows make a 10 x 10 cm square, you should definitely check whether you get that same measurement yourself. If your gauge swatch is smaller than specified, try again with larger needles. If it’s larger, use smaller needles accordingly. Otherwise, you run the risk that the measurements will be completely off in the end. And that would be a shame after all that beautiful work.

I usually just crochet for relaxation and to try things out—just winging it, so to speak. So I don’t really do a proper gauge swatch.
